Logos seem to have a life of their own, before you know it people can be linking your business to a particular colour scheme or graphic icon. Coke is red - Pepsi is blue; Nike is swoosh - Adidas is three stripe.
Sometimes the logo that will "do for now until we get more established" ends up staying around a bit longer than expected. For example, would Google have stuck with that logo if they could have seen into the future? Too late we've gone global, oops.
Think of all the places your logo may eventually be used: signage; company cars; billboards; the press, as well as the more usual: on stationery; business cards and websites. A logo should have the versatility to look good wherever it's placed.
